Addis Ababa – Lalibela Northern Churches
Begin your 3 days Lalibela tour with a short morning flight from Addis Ababa to Lalibela Airport, a one-hour journey that delivers you directly into the highlands of the Amhara region. Our guide will be waiting on arrival to welcome you, transfer you to your hotel, and give you time to settle in over lunch.
The afternoon belongs entirely to Lalibela’s legendary Northern Church Cluster – the largest and most iconic section of the UNESCO-listed complex. Your expert guide leads you through Bete Medhane Alem, one of the world’s largest monolithic churches and a breathtaking feat of 12th-century engineering. Continue to Bete Maryam, Bete Maskal, Bete Denagel, and the surrounding sanctuaries, threading through ancient rock-cut tunnels and sunken courtyards as priests in white robes move quietly between services.
Your guide brings each site to life – decoding the architectural symbolism, tracing the legend of King Lalibela, and explaining how these churches remain an active center of Ethiopian Orthodox pilgrimage to this day.

Lalibela – Southern Churches ( Bete Giyorgis & Village Life)
After your breakfast, your 3 days Lalibela tour continues into the Southern Church Group – a cluster of sites connected by dramatic trenches and rock-hewn passages. Visit Bete Gabriel-Rufael, perched dramatically at the edge of a deep trench, followed by Bete Amanuel, Bete Mercoreus, and the wider complex. Each church carries its own character, painted interiors, and centuries of unbroken tradition.
The undisputed highlight of the day and perhaps the entire tour is Bete Giyorgis (St. George’s Church), Lalibela’s most iconic monument. Carved downward into the earth in a perfect cross shape and dedicated to Ethiopia’s patron saint, it is one of the most photographed and spiritually resonant structures in all of Africa. Stand at its rim and take it in; descend to its doorway and understand why pilgrims have been making this journey for over 800 years.
The afternoon shifts into the surrounding countryside for a deeply authentic cultural encounter. Visit a traditional Lalibela village, meet local residents, and take part in an Ethiopian coffee ceremony; an age-old ritual of roasting, brewing, and sharing that sits at the very heart of Ethiopian hospitality. Lalibela – Naakuto La'ab Monastery – Addis Ababa
An early breakfast sets you up for a final highlight before your 3 days Lalibela tour draws to a close. Subject to your flight schedule and road conditions, drive out from Lalibela to visit Naakuto La’ab Monastery – a remarkable rock-hewn monastic retreat set into a cave, named after the nephew of King Lalibela who reigned after him. The monastery houses a fascinating collection of ancient crowns, crosses, and religious relics, and offers a quieter, more contemplative experience than the main church complex.
Return to Lalibela town for a final walk through the market lanes, time for souvenir shopping, or simply a peaceful sit with a macchiato overlooking the highland valleys. After lunch, your Worldsun guide transfers you to Lalibela Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
